The Kenyan Film scene is sure seeing a huge wave of creative talent. This time, from the short film of 2008 and winner of over ten International awards after ten years it has become a big love story- SUBIRA.

In 2008 at the Cannes Film Festival Producer, Director and Writer Sippy Chaddha stood proudly with her short film SUBIRA. Now this November 2018 she will be stepping on to the stage as a feature film director with the story that has been so close to her.

Subira is about a young girl who dreams to have her own way in a life that belongs to her, but will she be able to tackle the customs and traditions that hold her prisoner? Will she break free?

 

The film includes a great ensemble of actors starting with Brenda Wairimu, Tirath Padam, Nice Githinji and Melvin Alusa.

Brenda is known for her role in the soap opera Mali, Nice was nominated 2009 Kalasha Awards for Best Lead Actress in the film, All Girls Together, Melvin has starred in Hollywood films like The First Grader and Tirath is a new discovery who is making his debut in films with this great venture SUBIRA.

The team of SUBIRA that has crafted this story is of immense talent. Vibeke Muasaya- Producer has won the Queen’s award for best screenplay in 2018. Costume Designer Sophie Oprisanu who worked for Queen of Katwe is an excellent asset to Subira. Roselidah Taabu Obala who’s work in Veve gave her a nomination for Africa Magic’s Viewer’s Choice Awards for Best Editing and Terry Kelly who is an Emmy Award winning Editor known for his work in Star Trek and more make up the editing team.

Finally Director and Writer Sippy Chadha who began her film making journey almost 10 years ago with short films like Kibera Kid, Charcoal Traffic and Tick Tock is excited with her feature film debut of SUBIRA.

The film has already gained attention by being nominated for a record 13 nominations including Best Feature Film, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Cinematographer, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Lighting, Best Sound, Best Editor, Best Production Designer and Best Feature in Local Language. The main event will take place on 24th November 2018.
